KeePassXC is a modern, community-maintained fork of KeePassX, which is now discontinued. Setting up a secure database using the KeePassXC Getting Started Guide ensures your passwords, notes, and cryptographic keys remain encrypted locally on your device.
This step-by-step tutorial walks you through creating and configuring a highly secure database file (.kdbx). Step 1: Create a New Database Launch the KeePassXC application.
Click the Create new database button on the welcome screen (or navigate to File → New Database).
Enter a descriptive name for your database and an optional short description. Click Continue. Step 2: Configure Advanced Encryption Settings Locate the Encryption Settings screen.
Choose your encryption algorithm. While AES-256 is the default industry standard, you can switch to ChaCha20 for excellent performance on mobile ports and client devices.
Select the Key Derivation Function (KDF). Switch this to Argon2id, which is the internet standard recommended to protect against GPU/ASIC brute-force dictionary attacks.
Adjust the decryption time slider. Increasing this value increases the cryptographic difficulty (iterations), making it tougher for hackers to crack, though it will take a brief moment longer to open. Click Continue. Step 3: Establish Strong Database Credentials
